The UK has become the first country in the world to approve a Cover vaccine for general use.
The British regulator of medicines, the MHRA, has announced that the vaccine, produced jointly by Pfizer and BioNTech, and which offers up to 95%protection, is safe for use.
The logistical aspects of storing the vaccine - it must be stored at a temperature of -70 centigrade, means that initially it can only be given at hospitals that have the right storage facilities. None the less, the UK Health Secretary has said that 800,000 doses will be ready from the second week in December.
First to receive the vaccine will be the over 80's.
