CANADA – China has sentenced another Canadian citizen to death, the third since the arrest, in Canada, of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, daughter of the telecom giant’s founder.
Following the failure of representations to the Canadian government to obtain Wanzhou’s release, China has taken a range of seemingly retaliatory steps against Canada. These include:
banning some agricultural imports,
the retrial and sentencing of death of convicted Canadian drug smuggler Robert Schellenberg,
the same sentence being handed out to Canadian Xu Weihong on Thursday,
Ye Jianhui, another Canadian, was sentenced on Friday.
Meng Wanzhou was arrested at Vancouver Airport on 1st December 2019, at the request of the American authorities, on fraud charges connected to breaching sanctions against Iran. She remains in Canada under house arrest, awaiting the outcome of her extradition hearing to the US.
