Italian Ambassador to DR Congo Killed in Ambush

The Italian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luca Attanasio, an Italian police officer and their Congolese driver have been killed during an ambush on the United Nations convoy they were travelling with.

The convoy consisting of personnel and vehicles from the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) was attacked 08:15 GMT this morning, as it was travelling from the Regional Capital, Goma, to visit a UN World Food Programme project in the town of Rotshuru. No group has yet claimed/admitted responsibility for the attack and no further details are known at the time of writing.

The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi di Maio, has expressed "great dismay and immense sorrow" over the killing of his country's ambassador, police officer and local staff driver.
