China Enters Philippine Waters with 220 Ships

The Defence Secretary of the Philippines Delfin Lorenzana, has demanded a complete withdrawal of over 200 Chines ships from Whitsun Reef in the South China Sea.

The Reef is claimed by the Philippines and the 220 Chinese vessels anchored there are reportedly crewed by Chinese militia, rather than fishermen.

The Philippines claims that this action by China is a

"clear provocative action of militarising the area".

The Philippines Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has demanded a complete withdrawal of over 200 Chinese vessels from a South China Sea reef which is claimed by the Philippines. The Philippines Defense Secretary claims that the vessels were manned by militias and accuses China of a “ clear provocative action of militarizing the area.”

According to the Philippine government some 220 Chinese vessels are moored at Whitsun Reef.

The United Kingdom's Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier Strike Group, centred around the Aircraft Carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth is due to deploy to the region in the coming weeks.
